There are a plethora of great places to eat and drink in and around Kirkby Lonsdale. Let us tell you a little about our favourites:
In the Village
This wonderful tapas bar is relatively new to Kirkby Lonsdale. However it is a huge hit with locals. A menu packed with small bites full of taste. You will be hard pressed not to find dishes that you love.
The atmosphere is chilled and “moody”. With its own gin garden at the back of the restaurant for those warm summer evenings. Jonny and Kirsty are your hosts at Number 9 and will always stop by your table for a bit of crack.
This is the jewel of Kirkby Lonsdale in terms of its location and atmosphere. Avanti is tucked down a ginnel with the most beautiful walled garden. Perfect for Prosecco sipping in the summer.
The food is described as “rustic Mediterranean with a Spanish and Italian influence “. All yummy, particularly the pizzas!
The Royal Hotel
If you want some opulence in your surroundings then this is the place to step into. Only 1 minute from your suite at Absoluxe!
You can eat in here at any time of the day. Breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner are all catered for. Plus, you can choose your style of seating as it is a warren of rooms with different feels.
What to eat? Our favourites are the sharing platters-give them a try!
The Royal has also recently been awarded The Cask Marque which is an award for pubs with excellent quality cask ale – why not try a pint?
Is an eclectic mix of eating, drinking and events with a fire burning throughout the winter.
They put on different events that if your stay with us falls on one of them you should definitely consider going.
There is a wine club every 2 months on a Thursday evening down in their wine cellar – another warren of rooms and atmosphere!
Then on the first Sunday of each month, there is live music with your Sunday Roast!
The Sun Inn
This is Kirkby Lonsdale’s AA 2 Rosette rated restaurant. Which is well worth a visit. Their menus are prepared from locally sourced produce and served in a cosy environment. And again there is a fire roaring throughout the winter months.
We recommend trying the ‘Mini Sausages with mustard mayonnaise’ while you peruse the menu.
The Orange Tree
Sometimes we like to have a real meat hit and in Kirkby Lonsdale the place to go for this is The Orange Tree. This is just up from the churchyard and is what I would term as our Rugby Pub with a restaurant.
Here you will get steak specials, burger specials all locally sourced meat and the portions are not for the faint hearted!
Oh and this is also home to the KirkbyLonsdale Brewery so with your meat feast you can taste the local beer. Enjoy!
Out of Town… but certainly worth the drive
The Lunesdale Arms
Now this restaurant is a few miles from Kirkby Lonsdale but so worth a short drive along the picturesque Lune Valley. The décor is beautiful and tasteful with great attention given to lighting. We love this!
The food is described as a “British take on Southern Mediterranean cuisine”. Full of flavour and beautifully presented.
Our recommendations: Sicilian fish stew and the tagliata
Your host is Andy and he runs a great restaurant that overflows with atmosphere. He has developed several bars/restaurants in the Kirkby area, all have been a huge success and his staff all follow him wherever he moves to! We think this says a lot.
The Black Bull, Sedbergh
A recent addition to our culinary delights. The food is sublimely delicious with some conventional meals being given a taste provoking twist. The Hereford beef pie with creamy mash is packed with juicy tender beef. The pastry is absolutely divine.
There is also an opportunity to have some lovely wines by the glass – a bottle can be too much for one; sometimes! I often feel that wines by the glass are the cheaper less interesting ones served in many establishments. So for me this was a real treat!
A lovely touch from the Black Bull – when you book your table tell them you are staying at Absoluxe and you will receive 2 free glasses of Prosecco – show them your Absoluxe key fob on arrival!
This is indeed a place for special occasions or just because you want to indulge yourselves. The magic created in the kitchen by the North West’s leading emerging chef and MasterChef Finalist – Oli Martin – makes this a place worthy of serious consideration.
It is described as having “fantastic food and an intriguing wine list”.
When my husband treats us to go here I count the days until we go, After all, it is a truly gastronomic experience.
As you might expect, you will need to book in advance. Because all very popular with visitors and locals alike.
Enjoy your choices and if you wish to venture further into The Lake District we are happy to recommend more of our favourites!
