Where’s the best place to eat in Kirkby Lonsdale? It’s a question I get asked very frequently, and you know what it’s so hard to just pick one place!
You see this little market town of ours is a hive of excellent eateries, with something to suit every taste and budget. From quirky cafés to long luxurious sit down meals, it really is a town that caters for all.
As Absoluxe Suites is situated in the heart of the town, your next meal is just a short walk away and in this blog I thought I would outline the best places to experience lunch and dinner. After all you’re treating yourself to a weekend away so you might as well treat yourself to some delicious meals as well!
Lunch fit for a Queen – the best places to eat in Kirkby Lonsdale
Number Forty Four
I love this little place for a light lunch. Fresh soup, chunky sandwiches and home cooked chips…oh and also the scones are something special! There is some limited seating outside on the main street if you like to people watch, but I advise getting there early to grab those seats as it can get busy at lunch time!
The Royal Hotel
Another gorgeous eatery which is just a few doors from Absoluxe Suites, The Royal Hotel has quite an impressive presence on the main street. Love the elegant country décor of this place and you can indulge in a laid back lunch of pizza or tapas while enjoying your surroundings. They also do an excellent Sunday lunch with all the trimmings!
Platos
With brunch, small plates, grazing boards and bistro dishes there is something for everyone at Platos. Another really beautifully decorated eating establishment there’s lots of space to relax and have a laid back sharing platter, and the cocktail menu is something special.
The Kings Arms
You’ll find the Kings Arms just opposite to St Mary’s Church in a lovely old 16th Century building that is cosy and quaint. The menu here is small but the food is brilliant and the Sunday lunch is enormous. They also offer a famous vegan roast. I love to do the Ruskin’s View walk and stop off for lunch here.

Avanti
One of my favourite things about Avanti is their hidden courtyard garden, it really is a little gem in the heart of Kirkby Lonsdale, especially on a warm afternoon. Lunch is always flawless at Avanti with delicious pasta and fish dishes, plus traditional lunch dishes with a twist. The wine is also very good!
Number Nine Bar & Kitchen
This cosy little place is ideal for Autumn nights in Kirkby Lonsdale, when you just want to indulge in each other’s company and enjoy a really lovely meal. The menu is small but perfectly formed and I happen to love the Lamb Cutlets with Salsa Verde.
Botanica
A recent addition to Kirkby Lonsdale, Botanica serves Pan-Asian inspired cuisine and the blackened cod is a sight to behold, baked in banana leaf! The décor of this restaurant is quirky and fun and the cocktail menu is extensive so you can really let loose and enjoy yourself.

The Plough, Lupton – 8 minute drive
Drawing inspiration from the bountiful produce of the surrounding countryside, The Plough’s menu showcases an array of delectable dishes crafted with locally sourced ingredients. From hearty stews featuring tender cuts of Cumbrian beef to delicate salads adorned with hand-picked greens, each plate embodies the essence of the season.
Lunesdale Arms, Tunstall – 7 minute drive
Nestling in the beautiful Lune valley only 3 miles away from Kirkby Lonsdale sits The Lunesdale Arms, a firm favourite with locals and visitors. Specialising in a British take on Southern Mediterranean cuisine, offering a fine range of ales and specially selected wines.
The Highwayman, Nether Burrow – 5 minute drive
An 18th-century coaching inn on the Lancashire border has a welcoming bar and dining area with a cosy ambiance and two open fires, with a large outdoor area perfect for the summer months. Their passion lies in serving quality, fresh, and unpretentious modern British dishes with exotic influences.
Travertina, Ingleton – 11 minute drive
Contemporary Italian and Mediterranean cuisine served in a relaxed and friendly environment. Specialising in delicious pizzas, pasta, fresh fish and meat. Their chefs use only the freshest seasonal ingredients to create a varied and vivid menu selection to tempt the taste buds.
The Pheasant, Casterton – 4 minute drive
Chef Duncan Wilson, trained at the prestigious Sharrow Bay, presents an exciting menu filled with local produce. The restaurant offers a relaxed setting, using high-quality ingredients, and a focus on flavours cooked with love and attention to detail.

The Royal Barn
Love this little place, it has such a great atmosphere and it does really brilliant pizzas to eat in or takeaway. Why not stop for a quick drink while you’re waiting for your meal? Owned by Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery, The Royal Barn has an extensive collection of over sixty different craft beers.
Spice Essence
Sometimes only an Indian takeaway will do, especially on those winter nights where you just want to eat something filling and curl up and relax. Spice Essence is situated just along the high street and serves Indian and Pakistani dishes which are always very well priced.
Water Lilly
Another place to dine that is within stumbling distance of Absoluxe Suites! Water Lilly serves Chinese cuisine, which is always fresh and delicious, and perfect for if you’re fancying a night in.
